With many mourning the loss of our founding father, BreadTalk became an unlikely attention amidst the grieving nation after revealing their latest #RememberingLKY (李不开你 in Mandarin) bread to commemorate the life of Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Word playing with the late Mr Lee’s surname character 李 that translates to ‘won’t leave you’ in English, many find the naming disrespectful and insensitive. Some are questioning if BreadTalk had the new bread in their sales plan even before Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s passing.

The new bread is said to be filled with gula-melaka, grated coconut and attap seed, costs $2 each and all proceeds from the sales will go to the Community Chest.

Update Thursday 26 March, 9:02am: BreadTalk has apologised on their Facebook page, stating they have ceased selling the bun and donated $30,000 to Community Chest directly.
