In a major overhaul on the company’s operations in Southeast Asia, Rakuten Group has decided to close down the local version of the online marketplace within short notice, ending its brief 2-year run in Singapore when they first launched in early 2014.
The news came abruptly on Friday, 12 February when around 30 employees were asked to leave but not without severance packages according to a Straits Times report. If you frequently shop at Rakuten Singapore, you might want to utilise your Rakuten Super Points by 29 February 2016 before the website eventually closes.
According to the notice on the Rakuten Singapore website, they will cease operations and any further retail online after 1 March 2016.
