KFC Singapore’s latest fried chicken recipe is getting some big attention, going viral on the social media.

Named the Umakara Chicken, it features the same Colonel’s Fried Chicken except the same juicy meat is steeped in savoury shoyu marinade and coated with a crispy batter topped with Umami spice sprinkle for the extra flavour. Sounds like a masterpiece? It could be because the internet is going crazy over it, having thousands of likes and share on the official Facebook page and other food blogging media.

If you have no idea what Umami means, here’s a quick science lesson – The term Umami is created by a Japanese chemist which is translated as a ‘pleasant savoury taste’. Umami is tasted distinctly through our tongue receptors specific to glutamate and is one of the five basic tastes, together with sweetness, bitterness, sourness and saltiness.

As with most KFC new recipes, the Umakara Chicken won’t be a permanent resident. It will only be available for a limited period at all KFC restaurants islandwide except KFC KidZania, Nanyang Technological University, Sentosa and Singapore Zoo.
