6 reasons why the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be your new phone

It's finally coming

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ unveiled

The internet is buzzing about the new Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone.

Despite Note 7’s overheating issues and bad publicity the company have been receiving since last year, the South Korean tech titan is set to redeem themselves after assuring the quality and testing is their top priority when it comes to making smartphones.

The Note 7 has been discontinued in October last year but there are rumours that the infamous phone will be making its way back in refurbished sets since dumping them will have repercussions on the environment.

Samsung will probably be putting a lot of focus on the all-new Galaxy S8, although it will be challenging for them to chase back fans and lost customers.

It’s good news loyal fans; the new Android-based smartphone doesn’t disappoint – Galaxy S8 comes with a new design and some much welcome improvements.

Bezel-less Display

Similar to Xiaomi’s Mi Mix smartphone, the S8 will feature a bezel-less edge-to-edge screen with 18.5:9 display ratio. Samsung strangely dropped the “Edge” naming on the new phones. Instead, the larger 6.2-inch display phone will be named S8+.

To maximise screen area, Samsung has also removed the physical home button and replace it with a pressure-sensitive on-screen icon, similar to latest phones from Huawei and LG.

Flushed Powerful Cameras

For haters of protruding cameras that have been present on phones today, Samsung has managed to sit the rear camera flushed to the new phone’s surface, creating a smooth profile on the back.

Selfies get an 8-megapixel f/1.7 with smart autofocus camera on the front, while on the back a 12-megapixel f/1.7 camera with 4k video support. Software side, users can switch to Pro mode to adjust six settings: ISO, Shutter speed, Exposure, Colour tone, Manual Focus, and White Balance.

Samsung’s Selective Focus a.k.a. Depth-Of-Field focus (similar to Portrait Mode on the iPhone) will be available on the S8.

Iris Scanning Unlocking

Apart from fingerprint, pattern and passwords, Samsung S8 now allows users to unlock your phone using your face recognition and Iris scanning. Simply hold up the phone, and the phone automatically unlocks when it detects irises patterns.

The fingerprint scanner is now located at the back of the phone, where the index finger naturally goes to when picking it up. However, this also means users can’t unlock via fingerprint when the phone is placed flat, for example, on a table.

Extra Storage with Hybrid SIM

According to Samsung, this feature may vary by country but we sure hope it will be available when it releases in Singapore.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 now comes with a Hybrid SIM slot with expandable storage up to 256GB via microSD or the option of using an additional SIM card, excellent for frequent business travellers.

Gigabit LTE Support

Also known as the 5G network, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is the first smartphone capable of supporting gigabit download speeds on LTE. Currently, Singtel supports LTE-advanced which can go up to 450mbps; the telco plans to support gigabit networks by the end of the year.

The new phones will also support WiFi routers with 1024-QAM feature (Gigabit WiFi).

Voice Assistant – Bixby

For Android smartphone users who are not contented with Google’s voice assistant, Samsung’s Bixby is here to help. Similar to Siri on iPhone, press and hold the button to activate Bixby.

Bixby understands talk, text and taps and is able to handle tasks such as recommendations on places and products, translating documents, adding reminders and more. It is also able to understand instructions in Spanish, Korean and Chinese.

Both Samsung S8 and S8+ will be available in Singapore from 21 April 2017 with four colours to choose from – Midnight Black, Orchid Gray, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue and Maple Gold.
