Forget about salted egg pastries and cheese tarts, Castella cakes are in line to be the hottest treat in town.

Castella, pronounced as Kasutera in Japan, is a popular Japanese sponge cake made of sugar, flour, eggs, and starch syrup. The ingredients used will probably remind you of the Chinese Egg Cake (鸡蛋糕) although the recipe and baking process of Castellas today might be different to create that extra fluffiness and soft texture.

Similar to La Castella (樂古早味蛋糕), the first Castella bakery that opened in Tampines One a while back drawing long queues, Original Cake is the other famous Castella shop that originates from Taiwan to open at Westgate mall.

In celebration of their opening, Original Cake Singapore will be giving away 600 boxes of cakes for free starting from 10.30am on 23 September (Saturday).

Customers can also purchase them in three different flavours – Original, Golden Cheese, and Frozen Chocolate. The Castella cakes will also be available at a promotional price between $10 – $15.

Long queues are expected on opening day so be prepared to wait some time for your order to be fulfilled.
