Xiaomi unveils new flagship Mi 8 that has features like the iPhone X

The notch is here to stay

Mi 8 Explore Edition with a see-through back panel

Xiaomi skipped the number 7 and goes straight to 8 with its latest flagship, partly because the Chinese tech giant is celebrating their 8th anniversary.

Called the Mi 8, it is Xiaomi’s first full-screen phone and expectedly comes with the unsightly notch on the top of the screen. It comes in two version, the standard Mi 8 and a more premium version Mi 8 Explore Edition (EE).

Both phones are powered with Qualcomm’s fastest 845 processor, 6.21-inch AMOLED display, dual 12-megapixel AI cameras and for the first time, dual GPS which supposedly makes location-based services and navigation more precise. A 3D Face Unlock camera hides behind the notch, which operates similarly to Face ID on the iPhone X.

The Mi 8 EE further comes with 8GB of RAM, an underscreen fingerprint scanner and a see-through back panel.

Price of the Mi 8 starts from ¥2,699 (S$562) while the Mi 8 EE will cost ¥1,000 more.
