Xiaomi announces smaller 40-inch Mi TV 2 variant that cost under S$500

New (and old) kids on the block

Less than a year ago, Xiaomi introduced their flagship Mi TV 2 featuring a large 49″ display with 4K resolution panel made by LG that costs under S$800, and even comes with a high-quality soundbar and a wireless subwoofer.

Mi TV 2 isn’t just a display TV; it’s a media centre and Android gaming console altogether powered by a 1.45GHz quad-core CPU and a Mali-450 GPU that will play any video formats (even 10bit ones) smoothly.

Today they have just announced the same TV but in a smaller package. At just 14.5mm thick, new ultra-thin 40″ Mi TV 2 made by Sharp instead of LG features a similar processor except it’s missing a 4K display (only 1080p), lacks wireless 802.11ac, no microSD card support and no soundbar & subwoofer, which still isn’t much of a dealbreaker since you will still be able to enjoy the same gaming and media capabilities found in the larger sibling.

Perhaps the best news of all is the price, at just ¥1,999 (est~ S$440) the Mi TV 2 is incredibly affordable, and at the same time providing a very worthy alternative for smaller spaces. Xiaomi Singapore website doesn’t sell the Mi TV 2 yet and there’s no date on when that will happen, we are guessing regulations and logistics being the main factors why it hasn’t retail here yet.

In the meantime, if you wish to get your hands on one, you will have to go through forwarders or parallel importers and pray that it won’t break down anytime soon.
