Use Facebook on a daily basis to keep in touch with friends and family? You probably will have the Messenger app on your smartphone as well.

The once simple messaging app from the social network has since become bloated over the years of updates, from text and video calls to sending money and playing Facebook games directly.

For those who prefer to use Messenger simply for texting or calling, there’s the Messenger Lite which you can download from Google Play store. Facebook, however, has no intention to create the Lite edition for Apple devices.

Originally intended for developing countries where high-speed internet isn’t available, Facebook has decided to release Messenger Lite to more countries this week.

We tested the Messenger Lite and it does indeed load faster and has a simpler interface. It is also smaller – less than 10MB compared to almost 57MB on the standard Messenger app. Encrypted chats are not supported in the Lite edition, but there’s always Signal or Telegram for those purposes.

What’s more, Messenger Lite will also use as little data as possible to send your messages across, meaning it will still work in areas with spotty connections.
