While it may not be the most festive news for this Christmas long weekend, it’s worth noting that bus and train fares are set to increase starting today.
Up as much as 20 cents
As part of the fare review exercise held earlier in September this year, adult card fares increase by 10 to 11 cents per journey while cash fares, which are still accepted for bus rides, will increase by 20 cents. Concession card fares get a lower increase of 4 to 5 cents per journey to better support vulnerable commuters.
According to the Public Transport Council, the new fare adjustment is driven by the continued increase in energy prices, core inflation and strong wage growth in 2022.
It’s not all bad news though – there’s greater support for heavy users of public transport who belong to concessionary groups including students, seniors, full-time National Servicemen and more by reducing the hybrid (bus and train) monthly concession passes by up to 10%.
In addition, a new monthly concession pass will be introduced for Workfare Transport Concession Scheme Cardholders to assist lower-wage workers.
The fare adjustments will take effect starting from 23 December 2023.
