The Cathay Makes Its Comeback: Historic Mall in Dhoby Ghaut Could Reopen as Soon as Late March

After nearly 2 years of renovation

The Cathay is back — revamped, re-energised, and ready to welcome you

One of Singapore’s most iconic buildings, The Cathay, is set to reopen its doors after nearly two years of extensive renovations.

A Long-Awaited Return to Dhoby Ghaut

Located at Handy Road just minutes from Dhoby Ghaut MRT, the mall has remained closed since August 2023 — its first major redevelopment since 2003.

In a short teaser posted on Facebook earlier this month, Cathay Malls hinted at its return with the caption, “The wait will be over soon. Are you ready?” The comeback has since drawn quiet anticipation among heritage lovers and city-goers alike.

New Tenants, New Energy

Despite its delayed timeline — the mall was initially expected to reopen before Christmas 2024 — signs of activity have picked up.

Recent visits to the site have revealed a number of new tenants already setting up shop. Visitors can look forward to brands such as Miniso, Japanese grill chain Yakiniku Like, and popular Indonesian coffee brand Fore Coffee. These new offerings hint at a more vibrant, lifestyle-focused direction for the mall’s revival.

Sneak Peek: New Gym Opening

Among the most exciting additions to the new Cathay lineup is a brand-new 24/7 Fitness gym studio — and it’s opening officially on 27 March.

Even better, fitness enthusiasts can get an exclusive preview during a special open house on 25 and 26 March. Visitors will be able to tour the space, explore state-of-the-art machines, and experience the new facilities up close.

Respecting the Past While Moving Forward

The Cathay’s renovation, handled by DP Architects, is part of a broader rejuvenation plan for the Dhoby Ghaut area. DP Architects is no stranger to heritage-sensitive projects, having previously worked on landmarks like the Esplanade and Golden Mile Complex.

Despite its modern refresh, the mall’s historic facade remains intact. The front of the original theatre building, gazetted as a national monument in 2003, continues to stand as a quiet nod to Singapore’s cinematic history.

From Movie Palace to Mixed-Use Hub

Originally built in 1939, The Cathay was once home to Singapore’s first air-conditioned cinema. The Cathay Cineplex, which operated there for over eight decades, ceased operations in June 2022. Its absence left a notable void, briefly filled by The Projector as a pop-up space for indie screenings.

While there’s no word yet on whether a new cinema will be part of the reopening, the revitalised mall promises “a differentiated experience” with a refreshed tenant mix — suggesting a shift toward lifestyle and community-oriented offerings.

Looking Ahead

The Cathay’s return marks more than just the reopening of a mall — it signals a renewed energy for the Dhoby Ghaut district. As the city continues to evolve, this blend of old and new may well set the tone for other heritage spaces in Singapore.

For now, the lights are about to come back on at The Cathay — and the city is ready for the curtain to rise.
