A new era of air travel begins as Terminal 5 breaks ground at Changi Airport.
As Singapore’s Changi Airport breaks ground on Terminal 5, the city-state moves one step closer to redefining global aviation.
Designed to meet the demands of future travel, T5 is not merely another terminal—it is a bold leap toward shaping Singapore’s long-term economic resilience, connectivity, and innovation.
A Terminal That’s More Than Just an Airport
Conceived as early as the 2022 National Day Rally, Terminal 5 (T5) has since evolved into one of Singapore’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure projects. Spanning approximately 1,080 hectares—almost the current size of Changi Airport—T5 is expected to be completed in the mid-2030s.
More than just expanding capacity, T5 reflects Singapore’s commitment to staying ahead as a key global air hub, driving tourism, trade, and job creation.
Thoughtfully Grand: Mega in Scale, Human in Experience
Despite its scale, T5 is intentionally designed to feel warm and welcoming. At the heart of this concept are the “roof leaves”—a series of overlapping, curved roof segments that vary in height to create zones of intimacy or grandeur where needed.
This thoughtful use of architecture and biophilic design elements—including lush greenery and indoor gardens—creates a sense of calm for travellers, turning the hustle of air travel into an experience of comfort.
Smarter Mobility with Seamless Transfers
Moving through Terminal 5 will be intuitive and efficient. At its core is an intra-terminal automated people mover (APM) system, connecting passengers directly from disembarkation gates to the Arrival Immigration Hall.
This drastically reduces walking distances and supports smoother passenger flow—ideal for families, seniors, and travellers with heavy luggage.
Beyond the Terminal: Connecting Seamlessly with the City
T5 won’t exist in isolation. The terminal is fully integrated with the rest of Changi Airport, with both airside and landside links to Terminals 1 through 4. Beyond that, it will connect directly to two MRT lines—the Thomson-East Coast Line and the upcoming Cross Island Line—via a dedicated Terminal 5 MRT Station. A new Ground Transportation Centre will also offer access to buses, taxis, and private transport options, ensuring connectivity at every level.
Built for Tomorrow: Sustainability and Innovation at Its Core
T5 has been designed with climate resilience and sustainability in mind. Located 5.5 metres above sea level, the airfield is built to withstand the effects of climate change. Taxiways will channel rainwater effectively, while the terminal rooftop will be covered in solar panels—forming what could be Singapore’s largest rooftop solar facility. The energy generated will be enough to power approximately 20,000 four-room HDB flats annually.
On the ground, automation will ease manpower needs. A smart baggage handling system will function efficiently even during wet weather, reducing potential delays and streamlining the arrival experience.
More Than Travel: A Space for Everyone
What makes T5 truly different is its dual role—not just as a travel hub, but as a lifestyle destination. Above the Ground Transportation Centre, a large public area will be developed for families, friends, and airport staff to gather.
Whether it’s for dining, shopping, or entertainment, this new space invites both travellers and locals to enjoy the airport as a destination in itself.
A New Era Takes Flight
Terminal 5 isn’t just about managing future travel demand—it’s about transforming how people experience airports. With its human-centric design, cutting-edge systems, and deep integration with the city, T5 represents a bold new chapter for Singapore’s aviation story.
Construction may have just begun, but the journey toward the future of air travel is already well underway.
